PhD Position: Interdisciplinary Researcher-Identity Formation in Dutch Academia

The University of Groningen invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on the study of researcher identity formation within interdisciplinary academic contexts. This project, based in the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, aims to investigate how researchers navigate interdisciplinary work, develop professional identity, and benefit from mentoring and training programs. The research will combine longitudinal qualitative methods with large-scale quantitative approaches, contributing to the improvement of support and policy for interdisciplinary research at the University of Groningen.

Research Areas: The project centers on identity formation in interdisciplinary contexts, the role of mentoring and training programs, and the development of resilience among researchers. It will draw on expertise in developmental psychology, behavioral sciences, and psychometrics, under the supervision of Dr. Naomi de Ruiter and Dr. Muirne Paap.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a (Research) Master’s degree in a social science discipline by September 1, 2026. A strong background or interest in both qualitative and quantitative research methods is required, with experience in interview-based research considered a plus. Excellent English communication and academic writing skills are essential; Dutch language skills are appreciated but not mandatory. Candidates should be motivated to publish and complete a PhD thesis within four years and demonstrate competencies in conceptual thinking, planning, collaboration, and structured work.

Funding & Benefits: The position offers a gross monthly salary of €3,059–€3,881 (full-time), 232 vacation hours per year, 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, and extensive opportunities for personal and professional development. The initial contract is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for three additional years based on satisfactory progress. Teaching duties may comprise up to 15% of the candidate’s time, including supervision of Bachelor and Master theses.
