The Centre for IT & IP Law (CiTiP) at KU Leuven is offering a full-time PhD position in IT law. CiTiP is a renowned research unit within the Faculty of Law and Criminology, dedicated to advancing legal knowledge in ICT, ethics, digital media, and intellectual property. The Centre is affiliated with imec and collaborates with several interdisciplinary initiatives, including the Flemish Knowledge Centre for Data & Society, DigiSoc, Leuven Centre on ICT (LICT), and Leuven.AI. With over 30 years of experience, CiTiP conducts research on the legal and ethical aspects of innovative information and communication technologies, privacy, security, intellectual property, and biotechnology, serving both public and private sectors.

CiTiP comprises more than 90 researchers and fellows, including professors, postdoctoral researchers, teaching assistants, and administrative staff. The Centre is actively involved in projects funded by Horizon Europe/H2020, Digital Europe, Marie Curie, FWO, ICON, Belgian and Flemish authorities, and bilateral contracts. The PhD position focuses on IT law topics such as regulation of artificial intelligence (AI), online platforms, data governance, cybercrime, risk management, online safety of children, legal challenges in data spaces, AI and health law, privacy and AI, and enforcement of digital legislation. Candidates are expected to propose a research plan aligned with CiTiP’s ongoing research.

The successful candidate will also assist with teaching tasks at the Faculty of Law and Criminological Sciences, including thesis supervision and exam grading, in Dutch and/or English. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Law with a specialization in ICT law, demonstrate strong analytical and communication skills, and have experience in project work. Knowledge of Dutch and empirical research methods is an asset, as is practical experience. Flexibility, independence, teamwork, and willingness to contribute to CiTiP’s internal collaborations and activities are essential.

The offer includes a full-time doctoral scholarship for an initial term of one year, renewable up to a maximum of four years.
