About this position
The University of Bergen invites applications for a PhD position at the Faculty of Law, as part of the AI LEARN national centre. This interdisciplinary centre is dedicated to advancing responsible, human-centred artificial intelligence, with a focus on the empowerment of human learning and the governance of hybrid intelligence systems. AI LEARN brings together 31 partners from academia, public, and private sectors to address the societal challenges and opportunities presented by AI.
The PhD project is situated within Cluster 4: Governance, Ethics and Regulation, specifically the 'Regulatory Case Studies' project led by Professor Malgorzata Cyndecka. The research will focus on the legal challenges and opportunities associated with the use and regulation of synthetic data, particularly in relation to the GDPR and the AI Act, while aligning with the broader aims of AI LEARN. The successful candidate will conduct independent and collaborative research, disseminate findings at international conferences, and actively participate in the Research Group for Information and Innovation Law and the AI LEARN Centre community.
Applicants must hold a master’s degree in law (or equivalent), with a grade of B or higher on the master’s thesis, and demonstrate relevant research experience in law and AI. Proficiency in English is required, and knowledge of Scandinavian languages is an asset. The position is full-time for 3-4 years, with at least three years dedicated to doctoral research and the educational PhD programme. The remaining time may be allocated to career-promoting activities. The annual salary is NOK 568,700 before taxes, with enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and access to good welfare benefits. Further promotions are possible based on length of service and specialist education.
