About this position

Umeå University is advertising a PhD position in mathematical modelling and transport analysis within the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. The project is titled “Energy transition in everyday life – from vision to reality” and is carried out in collaboration with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the Municipality of Umeå, and Umeå Energi.

The doctoral project focuses on computational mathematics, statistics, transport modelling, energy systems, and activity-based modelling. The successful candidate will help develop and calibrate models that connect everyday activities, travel behaviour, and energy use, with applications to electrification of transport, electric vehicle charging, changing activity patterns, and scenario analysis for sustainable planning. The work is interdisciplinary and directly relevant to decision-support tools for transport and energy transitions.

Eligibility and requirements: applicants should have a second-cycle degree or equivalent, or at least 240 ECTS credits including 60 ECTS at second-cycle level. For doctoral admission in computational mathematics and statistics, at least 90 ECTS credits in computational mathematics and statistics or closely related fields are required, including 30 ECTS at second-cycle level. Strong skills in statistics, data analysis, machine learning, mathematical modelling, programming (Python, Matlab, C#, or similar), numerical analysis, optimisation, and operations research are expected. Experience with large datasets, simulation, GIS, transport modelling, or energy system analysis is a merit. Excellent English is required; Swedish is a strong advantage.

Funding and duration: the position is a four-year full-time doctoral employment, or up to five years if teaching part-time. Salary follows Umeå University’s PhD salary ladder. The employment may include up to 20% teaching or departmental duties.

Application deadline: 2026-05-24. Start date is August 2026 or by agreement. Applicants must submit a cover letter, CV, authenticated degree certificates and transcripts, relevant work samples (such as a master’s thesis or articles), a thesis summary if the thesis is not yet completed, test scores if available, and contact details for at least two references.

Supervisor/contact: Jonas Westin, Associate Professor, Umeå University, [email protected].

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
