About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is offering a fully funded PhD position in the Department of Electric Energy, focusing on the mechanical behaviour of transformer insulation under dynamic loading. This opportunity is part of the ClampIT project, which aims to advance knowledge on clamping force evolution in power transformers through experimental studies, sensor-based monitoring, and numerical modelling. The research is highly relevant to the reliability and safety of modern electrical grids, especially as they adapt to renewable energy integration and dynamic load patterns.

As a PhD candidate, you will join the High Voltage Technology research group at NTNU, working in a collaborative and inclusive environment with regular professional and social activities. The project will investigate how the mechanical properties of transformer insulation materials, such as cellulose-based pressboard and kraft paper, change under varying temperature, moisture, and ageing conditions. Key research activities include experimental characterization of viscoelastic and viscoplastic behaviour, accelerated ageing experiments, analysis of fast deformation during electromechanical stresses, and numerical simulations of oil-impregnated paper insulation under dynamic loading.

The position is supervised by Professor Øystein Hestad and Dr. Henrik Enoksen, and is part of a consortium involving leading industry partners, utilities, and research organizations. The results of this research will contribute to improved transformer design standards and predictive maintenance strategies, enhancing the security and reliability of electricity supply.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in electric power engineering, physics, physical chemistry, material science, or equivalent, with a strong academic record (B or better on NTNU's grading scale). English proficiency at B2 level (CEFR) is required, and documentation via TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge English is recommended. Preferred qualifications include experience in high voltage insulation technology, numerical simulations (Finite Element, Finite Volume, Python, MATLAB), and material characterization of polymeric materials. Personal qualities such as motivation, independence, effective communication, resilience, and integrity are valued.

The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, favorable pension terms, free Norwegian language training, working capital for project implementation, and access to a mentor programme and employee benefits. The employment period is 3 years, with the possibility of additional career-enhancing activities. The preferred start date is summer or early autumn 2026, and the application deadline is 26 January 2026.

To apply, submit your application electronically via Jobbnorge.no, including a cover letter, project outline, CV, transcripts, diplomas, documentation of English proficiency, and contact information for three referees. All documents must be in Norwegian, a Scandinavian language, or English. For further information, contact Professor Øystein Hestad at [email protected].

NTNU is committed to diversity, equality, and inclusion, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The university offers a vibrant academic environment in Trondheim, Norway’s tech capital, with excellent opportunities for professional development and quality of life.
