About this position

Radboud University in the Netherlands is offering a PhD position focused on the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration, with a particular emphasis on Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. The lab's current focus includes CMT peripheral neuropathy associated with tRNA synthetase mutations and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) linked to FUS and TDP-43 mutations.

The successful candidate will investigate the cell type specificity of CMT disease, using a variety of advanced techniques such as viral gene transfer, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, next-generation sequencing, proteomics, immunohistochemistry, FISH, confocal imaging, and in vivo noncanonical amino acid tagging (NCAT) to evaluate protein synthesis. The position also involves participation in other ongoing projects, including the development of innovative therapeutic approaches for CMT and studies on mitochondrial dysfunction in axonal degeneration.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree (or be close to obtaining one) in Neuroscience, Molecular (Neuro)biology, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Genetics, or a related field. Experience with mouse genetics and molecular biology is advantageous, and candidates must have permission to work with mice (Article 9 – FELASA B). A strong command of English is required, and the ideal candidate will be motivated, creative, team-oriented, and eager to engage in scientific discussions.

The PhD position is fully funded, offering a four-year contract (initially 1.5 years, extendable upon positive evaluation), with a starting gross monthly salary of €3,059, rising to €3,881 in the fourth year. Additional benefits include an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, extra annual leave, flexible working hours, pension plan, and discounts on sports and cultural activities.
