About this position

This fully funded PhD position is part of the MSCA doctoral network iSTRIDE, focusing on molecular analyses of microbial biofilms on indwelling medical devices. Hosted at MoKi Analytics GmbH and matriculated at the University of Leipzig, the project aims to advance understanding of indwelling device-associated infections (IDAIs) and develop innovative diagnostic tools and antimicrobial coatings. The iSTRIDE network comprises leading academic and industrial partners, including hospitals, research institutes, universities, and companies, offering a rich interdisciplinary environment for doctoral candidates.

The research will center on ex vivo and in vitro models for device infections, with a strong emphasis on biotechnology, medical and molecular microbiology, molecular imaging techniques such as Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and AI-driven digital image analysis. The position provides opportunities for network-wide training, structured workshops, and research secondments at partner institutions in Slovenia and The Netherlands, as well as a mandatory hospital internship during the first year to gain clinical exposure.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (120 ECTS or equivalent) in natural sciences, possess strong analytic and quantitative skills, and have laboratory experience in medical microbiology or biotechnology. Experience with FISH, antimicrobial agents, and pharmacology is highly desirable. Excellent English proficiency, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to present at international conferences are required. Candidates must not have been awarded a PhD and must not have resided or worked in Germany for more than 12 months in the past three years.

The position is funded through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DN) Horizon Europe programme, offering a 36-month contract with stipend, tuition, and comprehensive training. The primary academic advisor is PD Dr. Judith Kikhney, with additional mentorship during secondments. After completing the program, graduates will have a thorough understanding of research, innovation, and industrial implementation, as well as a strong international network.

To apply, submit your application by email to [email protected], including a letter of motivation, CV, academic diplomas and certificates, and contact details of two references. Applications are reviewed starting May 1st, with the search concluding by June 30th, 2026. For further information, visit MoKi Analytics GmbH or the position page.
