The Simula Metropolitan Center for Digital Engineering in Oslo, Norway, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Multimodal Learning. The position is hosted by the Data Science and Knowledge Discovery Department (DataSci), which focuses on developing advanced machine learning (ML) and data science methods, particularly in multimodal learning, knowledge-guided ML, and interpretable pattern discovery. Research applications include omics and neuroimaging data analysis, with a strong emphasis on tensor decompositions and interpretable AI.

The PhD project will explore the intersection of multimodal learning, self-supervised learning, contrastive learning, and coupled tensor decompositions. The research aims to develop interpretable multimodal learning methods for analyzing data from both abundant and scarce modalities, addressing the nonlinearity-interpretability tradeoff. Applications span complex systems such as the human brain and metabolome, with a focus on early detection of disease risk factors using multi-omics data.

Candidates must hold both BS and MS degrees in computer science, data science/machine learning, signal processing, or applied mathematics. Essential qualifications include a strong background in numerical linear algebra, numerical optimization, data science, or ML, with top grades, fluency in MATLAB and/or Python, and a solid programming background. An average GPA of at least B in BS and A in MS is required. Experience with low-rank approximations is a plus. Applicants should demonstrate excellent English skills, interpersonal abilities, and a willingness to work in an international team. Interest in real data challenges is desirable.
