About this position
The University of Gothenburg invites applications for a doctoral student position in Natural Science, specialising in Biology, with a research focus on Structural Biology. This opportunity is based at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology, a vibrant and international environment renowned for its research spanning atomic, molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. The successful candidate will join the research group of Professor Gisela Brändén, collaborating closely with other groups within the Biochemistry and Structural Biology Division.
The Brändén group employs advanced biochemical and biophysical techniques to investigate the structure, function, and dynamics of proteins. A particular emphasis is placed on innovative methods in structural biology, including the use of X-rays from synchrotrons and XFELs to monitor real-time structural changes in proteins. The specific PhD project centers on time-resolved structural studies of the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase using serial crystallography and complementary biophysical approaches. Experiments will be conducted at international research facilities, such as the MAX IV synchrotron in Lund, and in collaboration with global partners. The methodologies developed will also be applied to other enzymes, contributing to broader understanding in medicine and biotechnology.
As a doctoral student, you will be responsible for expressing and purifying proteins, developing crystallization protocols, manipulating crystals, and designing experimental setups to collect time-resolved X-ray data. Data processing and structural analysis are integral components of the project. You will also participate in scientific writing, publication, and presentation of research findings at national and international conferences and seminars. The position includes departmental duties (up to 20% of full-time employment), such as teaching and administration, which may extend the study period accordingly.
Eligibility requirements include a completed second-cycle (Master’s) degree in a relevant natural science field, or equivalent qualifications (at least 240 credits, with 60 at second-cycle level). Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in spoken and written English, with recommended minimum TOEFL scores (550 paper-based, 213 CBT, or 79 iBT). Selection will prioritize candidates with strong academic and scientific records, collaborative skills, independence, enthusiasm for research, and a willingness to learn new techniques. Physical presence at the department is mandatory, and international applicants must secure a valid residence permit prior to starting.
Upon admission, you will be employed as a doctoral student for four years full-time, with salary and benefits determined by university policy. The University of Gothenburg values diversity and equal conditions, offering a supportive environment for international researchers and their families. For further details about the research group, visit the provided academic page. Application must be submitted via the university’s recruitment portal by November 24, 2025, including a personal letter, CV, diploma and transcripts, proof of English proficiency, and two references. For degree verification, contact details of the issuing institution may be required.
