About this position
PhD Position in Neurodegenerative Disease and Neuropathology (Joint UTS & UM Program)
This fully funded joint PhD program between the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the University of Macau (UM) offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration and myelin pathology, with a focus on Ataxia-Telangiectasia. The project aims to dissect the spatiotemporal relationship between synaptic loss, oligodendrocyte dysfunction, and disease progression, leveraging the expertise of two leading research groups: Dr. Franki Kai-Hei Tse (UTS) and Assistant Professor Aifang Cheng (UM).
Dr. Cheng’s group specializes in the molecular pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and the discovery of neuroprotective compounds using multidisciplinary approaches, including virtual screening, molecular biology, and neuropharmacology. Dr. Tse’s group investigates cellular mechanisms of myelin pathology in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Ataxia-Telangiectasia, and multiple sclerosis.
The successful candidate will employ molecular approaches to study DNA double strand break repair, aberrant cell cycle events, and autophagy impairments in neurons and glia, both in vitro and in vivo. The project will delineate the relationship between synaptic loss, oligodendrocyte pathology, and disease progression in Ataxia-Telangiectasia, with a multidisciplinary approach focusing on autophagy and cellular senescence in postmitotic brain cells.
This joint PhD program follows a 2+2 structure: two years at UM and two years at UTS, with regular collaborative exchanges. Candidates will benefit from access to state-of-the-art facilities, international collaboration, and a vibrant research environment.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold a master’s degree with a research thesis of at least 6 months, or an outstanding Bachelor’s degree (First Class or Second-Class Division 1) in life sciences, neuroscience, pharmacology, biochemistry, or a related field. Admission requirements of both UTS and UM must be met. International and domestic students (Australian residents or New Zealand citizens) are eligible. International students must meet visa requirements, including full-time, on-campus enrolment and completion within the standard duration. English language proficiency is required.
Selection Criteria: Strong laboratory research background in molecular biology, bioinformatics and/or neuroscience; motivation for neurodegeneration, glial cell biology, and genetic diseases; publication/conference record; strong written and verbal English communication skills; ability to work independently and in teams.
Funding: The position is fully funded, offering AUD 37,000 per year for 3.5 years.
Application Process: Send your CV and list of publications to Dr. Franki Tse ([email protected]) by the closing date. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted with further details. The application process is open until all positions are filled. For more information, visit the UTS Graduate Research applications page and the UTS Scholarship search tool.
Deadline: October 30, 2026.
This is an excellent opportunity for motivated students with a strong background in neuroscience, molecular biology, or related fields to join a cutting-edge research program and contribute to advancing our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases.
