PhD Position in NMR Spectroscopy of Na-ion Battery Materials at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), a leading German University of Excellence and member of the Helmholtz Association, invites applications for a PhD position in the Institute for Applied Materials – Energy Storage Systems (IAM-ESS). This 3-year doctoral project, starting March 1, 2026, focuses on advanced research in the characterization of local structures and ion dynamics in electrolyte and electrode materials for sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries using (solid-state) NMR spectroscopy.

The successful candidate will investigate ion-specific transport mechanisms and interactions in both liquid and solid electrolytes, elucidate desoiation/resodiation processes in electrodes during electrochemical cycling, and apply operando NMR techniques to observe sodium speciation, metal plating, and dendrite growth. The research aims to contribute to the development of next-generation energy storage systems, addressing urgent challenges in climate change, energy transition, and sustainable resource use.

Applicants should possess a Master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline. Prior experience with NMR spectroscopy, relaxometry, diffusometry, or battery assembly/testing is highly desirable.
