About this position

PhD Position in Organometallic Chemistry at TU Wien

A fully funded PhD position is available at the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry, Technische Universität Wien (Vienna, Austria), under the supervision of Stefan Weber. The project focuses on the synthesis of novel iron carbene complexes and their application in catalysis, with emphasis on base-metal chemistry, reaction development, and mechanistic studies.

The position is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and is intended to start ideally in September 2026. It is a 3-year PhD position (initially 1 year with the option for extension up to 3 years total) with an expected salary of €2,832.10 gross/month (14x per year).

Research keywords: organometallic chemistry, catalysis, iron carbene complexes, synthesis, characterization, reaction mechanisms, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray analysis, GC-MS, LC-MS.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in chemistry, preferably with an organic or organometallic background. Experience with air- and moisture-sensitive compounds, catalytic transformations, and product analysis is expected. Strong English skills (C1) are required; German (B2/C1) is an advantage. The role also values independent working ability, teamwork, and willingness to supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s students.

How to apply: submit a cover letter, scientific CV, recommendation letter(s) from your MSc advisor (mandatory) and other academic advisors (optional), and your MSc certificate if available. Applications should be sent by email to [email protected].
