About this position

The University of Bern is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position in climate sciences, focusing on paleoclimatology and data science. The research project, Pixel2Paleo, aims to revolutionize the study of lake sediments as natural archives of Earth's history by applying advanced imaging techniques such as µXRF elemental mapping, Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI), and Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI). The project will analyze biogeochemical fingerprints, including elemental composition, mineralogy, and organic compounds, to reconstruct past climate and environmental conditions.

A key aspect of the project is the integration of high-resolution sediment data from Swiss lakes with modern observational datasets, such as water temperature, nutrient levels, and lake productivity. This interdisciplinary approach will build a publicly accessible database correlating sediment composition with specific climate and environmental conditions, setting new standards for paleoclimate research and adhering to FAIR data principles.

The successful candidate will join the Institute of Geological Sciences and the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research, working within the Sedimentary Geochemistry unit. The position offers flexibility to tailor research focus based on individual skills and interests, including laboratory work, fieldwork, and advanced data science methods such as pixel clustering and neural networks. Comprehensive training in analytical methods and data science is provided, along with access to state-of-the-art facilities and opportunities for international collaboration.

Applicants should have a Master's degree in Earth Sciences or a related field, with backgrounds in biogeochemistry, limnology, sedimentology, environmental research, ecology, hydrology, data science, or image processing. Strong analytical skills, independence, teamwork, and proficiency in English are required. The project encourages diversity and inclusiveness, especially applications from underrepresented groups.

The position is fully funded for 4 years, with a competitive SNSF-funded salary starting at approximately 50,000 CHF gross annually.
