The position is co-financed by the Gender Research School at the Umeå Centre for Gender Studies, providing a unique interdisciplinary research environment. The department is highly internationalized and active in a broad range of philosophical areas, including applied ethics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, political philosophy, and more. The research environment is dynamic, with regular seminars, guest lectures, and workshops.
Doctoral students will develop their research plan and dissertation project in consultation with assigned supervisors, including Professor Pär Sundström. The program emphasizes active engagement in the research community, participation in seminars, conferences, and interdisciplinary activities within the Gender Research School. The doctoral student will also participate in regular seminar groups, residential retreats, and ensure that half of their courses include a gender perspective.
Applicants must hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in a relevant field, with at least 240 credits (including 60 at the second-cycle level), and at least 30 credits at the second-cycle level in philosophy, practical philosophy, or theoretical philosophy, including a degree project of at least 15 credits. Equivalent knowledge may be considered. Assessment is based on academic performance, essays, research plan quality, relevance of the gender perspective, references, and interviews. The degree must be completed by the end of the application period.
The position is a full-time, four-year employment (with possible extension up to five years), starting September 1, 2026. The monthly salary starts at SEK 30,900 and increases to SEK 35,600, with full state employee benefits including vacation, leave, and retirement. Doctoral students may also teach or perform administrative duties up to 20% of their time. The work location is Umeå University, and a high level of presence in the research environment is required.
To apply, candidates must submit a degree certificate, transcripts, CV with references, relevant theses/publications, a motivation letter, and a research plan with a gender focus (max 30,000 characters). Applications are accepted via the Varbi e-recruitment system until January 30, 2026. For more information, contact Professor Pär Sundström at [email protected].
