About this position
The Physiological Plant Ecology group at the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Basel, Switzerland, is offering a four-year fully funded PhD position in physiological tree ecology, starting July 2026 or later. This project, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNFS), is conducted in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL). The research aims to advance understanding of the physiological and ecological mechanisms that define the upper elevational and latitudinal distribution limits of European temperate tree species, focusing on species-specific low temperature thresholds and their impact on tree growth and hydraulic relations.
The PhD candidate will plan and execute experiments with seedlings of various European tree species to identify physiological mechanisms and biological consequences of cold-temperature restrictions on root water uptake. The research will investigate aquaporin-facilitated root water transport as a cause for differing cold sensitivities among species, using stable isotope labelling and continuous sap flow measurements. Fieldwork will include in situ measurements of soil and air temperatures across elevational transects in the Swiss Alps, relating experimentally identified hydraulic cold thresholds to natural upper elevational limits of tree species. The candidate will also contribute to field measurements at the long-term alpine treeline research site Stillberg in Davos, Switzerland, and participate in teaching within the research group.
Applicants should hold a MSc degree in botany, ecology, forest science, environmental science or related fields, with basic knowledge of plant physiology. Experience with plant ecophysiological methods and a basic understanding of electrical engineering are advantageous. Candidates must be able to conduct greenhouse experiments with tree seedlings, perform statistical analyses with R, and be willing to undertake fieldwork in subalpine terrain. Strong communication and organizational skills, teamwork, and commitment to an inclusive workplace are essential. Very good written and spoken English is mandatory.
