About this position
Empa, a leading Swiss research institution within the ETH Domain, is renowned for its pioneering work in materials science and technology. The Coating Technologies Group at Empa's Laboratory for Surface Science & Coating Technologies specializes in physical vapor deposition (PVD) of innovative thin films, driving advancements in emerging technologies. By integrating state-of-the-art PVD, high throughput experimentation, and data science, the group develops thin films with enhanced performance and discovers new functional materials.
This PhD project focuses on the development of piezoelectric nitrides, such as AlScN, using reactive high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). Piezoelectric materials are crucial for technologies like frequency filters in 5G/WiFi communication and precision motion/sensing at micro scales. The increasing demand for highly integrated micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) necessitates novel piezoelectric thin films. The research leverages Empa's unique laboratory, which combines advanced PVD, surface analysis, and closed-loop autonomous experimentation, to develop highly efficient piezoelectric thin films and utilize large datasets to deepen understanding of synthesis-structure-property relationships in polar nitride materials.
The project sits at the intersection of materials science, physics, and data science, offering ample opportunities for academic and professional growth. The successful candidate will work on the Empa Campus in Dübendorf and be enrolled in the doctoral program at ETH Zürich, benefiting from a stimulating, international, and collaborative research environment with excellent infrastructure and interdisciplinary support.
Eligibility: Applicants must have a master’s degree in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field, with hands-on experience in thin film deposition and UHV technology. Experience in materials science, piezoelectric/ferroelectric materials, semiconductors, sputter deposition, materials characterization (XRD, XPS, SEM/TEM), lab automation, data science, and python is advantageous. Strong English skills are required; German is optional. Candidates should demonstrate initiative, systematic work habits, reliability, responsibility, teamwork, and communication skills.
Funding: The position is fully funded for four years, including salary and enrollment in the ETH Zürich doctoral program.
Application Window: The position is available from 1st July 2026 or later by agreement. Empa values inclusion and respect, welcoming all applicants interested in innovative, sustainable, and meaningful research.
How to Apply: Apply online via the provided application link. Prepare your CV, cover letter, and academic documents. Ensure you meet the eligibility requirements before submitting. For questions, contact Empa HR.
