About this position

The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), part of the Umeå Plant Science Centre, is offering a PhD position in plant development within the Meristem Hydraulics Group. This research project focuses on vascular cambium plasticity during secondary growth, specifically investigating how fluctuating water availability impacts cambial activity in Hybrid Aspen and Arabidopsis thaliana. The successful candidate will integrate developmental biology and plant physiology approaches, utilizing imaging, image analysis, lineage tracing, and water stress experiments. Research activities include greenhouse tree studies and Arabidopsis experiments in climate-controlled chambers, aiming to achieve a comprehensive understanding of cambial development and plant adaptation to environmental changes.

SLU and the Umeå Plant Science Centre are recognized for excellence in experimental plant research and forest biotechnology, with a mission to generate knowledge that benefits forestry, agriculture, the environment, and society. The research environment is interdisciplinary, spanning cell biology, ecophysiology, and industrial applications, with a strong emphasis on innovation and societal impact.

Applicants must meet both general and specific entry requirements for third-cycle (doctoral) studies. General requirements include a second-cycle (Master’s) qualification or equivalent, with at least 240 credits (60 at second-cycle level). Specific requirements for Biology include at least 90 HEC in biology-related subjects (30 at second-cycle level) and English proficiency equivalent to Swedish upper-secondary qualification Engelska B/6. Required skills are a background in tree development and wood formation, greenhouse experience, microscopy and histology skills, and strong English communication. Meritorious skills include experience in tree physiology, phenotype data integration, strong communication, and teamwork ability. Candidates with foreign citizenship must present a certified copy of their passport at the interview.

The position is a 4-year doctoral employment with salary set by local collective agreement and fixed salary progression. The research is based in Umeå, Sweden, with a start date upon agreement. SLU offers an inclusive and gender-equal work environment, welcoming applicants from diverse backgrounds.
