PhD Position in Qualitative Methodology: Youth in the Loop of AI Developments (IAmAI Project) KU Leuven in Belgium

Join the Centre for Methodology of Educational Sciences (CMPO) at KU Leuven, one of Europe’s leading research universities, for a PhD position focused on qualitative methodology and youth engagement in AI developments. The CMPO, part of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, is internationally recognised for its expertise in advanced research methodology, including both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Under the supervision of Prof. Melissa De Smet, you will contribute to the IAmAI project, which aims to bridge the gap between the idiographic needs of young people and the nomothetic strengths of AI through participatory research.

The project addresses the limitations of current AI tools, which often fail to capture the dynamic, context-dependent nature of identity development and learning processes in youth. Your doctoral research will focus on developing and validating qualitative participatory methodologies that place adolescents at the centre of AI application development, validation, and implementation. The research emphasises personalisation in learning modules, interventions, and GenAI chatbots, reconceptualised from a participatory perspective. Co-creation with young people is a guiding principle, and the outcomes will inform methodological and policy recommendations.

As a PhD researcher, you will conduct original research, publish in international scientific journals, participate in conferences, and support teaching in psychology and educational sciences. The position offers a full-time appointment for four years (initial one-year contract, extendable upon positive evaluation), starting around 1 October (negotiable). Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in educational sciences, psychology, or a related discipline in the humanities or social sciences. Essential skills include qualitative research expertise, affinity with youth, awareness of AI developments, flexibility in data collection and analysis, academic writing experience, ethical awareness, problem-solving and analytical skills, initiative, teamwork, and fluency in Dutch and English.
