About this position
The Koperski Laboratory at the Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials, National University of Singapore, is recruiting a PhD student for the August 2026 intake. The research focuses on condensed matter physics, with particular emphasis on quantum phenomena in materials, optical spectroscopy, 2D devices, and experiments under extreme physical conditions such as low temperatures (down to 1.7 K), high magnetic fields (up to 9 T), and high pressure (up to 9 GPa).
Research directions include single photon emitters, ferromagnetism, excitons and photonics, and advanced sensing using two-dimensional materials. The laboratory is known for its work on quantum light emission, magnetism, and optoelectronic properties of materials, with recent publications in top journals covering topics such as Nb impurity-bound excitons, quantum emitters in monolayer WS2, and magnetic 2D materials.
Applicants should have a strong background in physics and technical skills for advanced experimental work. Experience in cryogenic optical spectroscopy is preferred. The position is fully funded, with a PhD scholarship provided according to NUS guidelines, including stipend and tuition coverage.
To apply, candidates must submit an application to the MSE PhD programme via the official NUS portal and send their CV directly to Dr. Maciej Koperski at [email protected]. The application deadline is 15 January 2026. For more information on the research group and projects, visit the group webpage at https://ifim.nus.edu.sg/koperski/.
This opportunity is ideal for students interested in quantum physics, materials science, and experimental condensed matter research, especially those with experience in optical spectroscopy and 2D materials.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
How to apply
Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
