About this position

The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is offering a 4-year, fully funded PhD position in the RNA Biology of Trees. This opportunity is part of the WIFORCE – Wallenberg Initiatives in Forest Research School and is based at the renowned Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) in Umeå, Sweden. The research focuses on understanding how trees such as Norway spruce and Scots pine adapt their RNA synthesis during their life cycle, particularly in response to environmental stress and climate change. The project will utilize advanced sequencing techniques to study transcription initiation and termination in trees exposed to various stressors, contributing to knowledge on sustainable forestry and climate adaptation.

The research group is multidisciplinary, working across plant cell biology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and forest biotechnology. The successful candidate will engage in both wet lab and bioinformatic analyses, aiming to uncover mechanisms of plant adaptation and growth regulation. The position is ideal for candidates passionate about plant science, climate change, and sustainable use of natural resources.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a MSc (or equivalent) in Biology or a related field, with at least 90 ECTS credits relevant to biology and 15 ECTS credits in a closely related subject, plus an independent project of at least 15 ECTS credits. A background or strong interest in bioinformatics and/or plant molecular biology is desirable. Excellent written and spoken English is required. Candidates should be motivated, collaborative, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. International applicants must provide attested copies of their passport and degree certificates.

Funding: The position is a full-time, 4-year employment as a PhD student at SLU, with salary and benefits according to university standards. No tuition fees are required for PhD students in Sweden.

Application: Applications must be submitted via the SLU job portal by 10 February 2026. Required documents include a CV, degree certificates, transcripts, references, and proof of English proficiency. More information and the application link can be found on the official SLU vacancy page.
