About this position

Clausthal University of Technology, located in the scenic UNESCO World Heritage Harz Mountains, is a research-intensive institution renowned for its commitment to the "Circular Economy" and sustainable digital society. The Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISSE) is seeking two PhD candidates to join the Dependable and Autonomous Cyber-physical Systems (DACS) research group. These positions focus on software engineering for dependable, AI-based automated driving systems using the Autoware stack, with direct application and testing on real automated shuttles for public road deployment.

As a doctoral researcher, you will engage in cutting-edge research and development of software architectures and prototypes for safe and reliable automated driving. Responsibilities include designing, implementing, and evaluating software systems, applying modern engineering approaches such as agile methods, model-based development, and CI/CD pipelines. You will also contribute to interdisciplinary projects, publish research findings at conferences, and support teaching activities within the B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs.

Applicants should possess a completed Master’s degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related field, with excellent to good academic results. Essential skills include strong knowledge of software engineering principles, very good programming abilities in Python and C++, and ideally hands-on experience with ROS2. Experience in AI development, particularly neural networks, and proficiency with standard development tools (Git, CI/CD, IDEs, issue tracking) are required. Candidates must demonstrate excellent German language skills (C1 or higher) and good English proficiency. Additional desirable qualifications include practical experience in software testing, runtime monitoring, or automated driving system development, familiarity with modern development methods (e.g., Scrum, model-based development), and initial experience with scientific publications or complex software projects.

The university offers a family-friendly, collegial environment with flexible working hours, remote work options, and access to modern laboratories and simulation environments. Researchers benefit from direct involvement in industrial projects, regular training opportunities, and a vibrant social atmosphere including a Lounge Lab and social events. The position is full-time (TV-L E 13, 100%) for up to three years, with the possibility of part-time work. Compensation includes a special annual payment and supplementary pension plan (VBL). TU Clausthal is committed to equality, diversity, and family-friendliness, and encourages applications from all nationalities and individuals with disabilities.

Applications should include a CV, master’s degree certificates, and transcript of grades, submitted as a single PDF via email by January 25, 2026. For further information, visit the ISSE Institute website or the official job posting. Please note that application costs cannot be reimbursed and documents will be destroyed after the selection process in accordance with legal regulations.
