About this position
The University of Gothenburg is offering a fully funded PhD position in Theoretical Physics, focusing on Condensed Matter Theory and Statistical Physics. The successful candidate will join the research group of Dr Johannes Benedict Hofmann at the Department of Physics, located on the main campus of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. The department is renowned for its vibrant research environment, international collaborations, and strong educational programs spanning atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics, spintronics, and complex systems.
This doctoral project centers on developing advanced statistical methods based on kinetic theory, employing both numerical and analytical approaches to investigate charge and heat transport in electron and electron-phonon gases. A key focus will be hydrodynamic transport—a recently observed mode of transport driven by dominant interactions—in both solid-state systems and atomic quantum gases. The position offers close supervision within a small, active theory group and opportunities for international collaboration.
Doctoral studies at the University of Gothenburg are structured as four years of full-time research and study, leading to a doctoral degree. The position includes departmental duties (up to 20% of full-time employment), such as teaching and administrative tasks, which may extend the study period accordingly. Employment is fixed-term and comes with a competitive salary and social benefits as per Swedish regulations.
Eligibility requirements include a completed second-cycle (master’s level) degree in a relevant natural sciences subject, or at least 60 higher education credits at second-cycle level in a relevant area, or equivalent qualifications. Applicants must demonstrate a strong command of spoken and written English, with guidelines suggesting a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (or 213 CBT, or 79 iBT). The selection process favors highly motivated individuals with experience and interest in analytical and numerical calculations in condensed-matter physics, statistical physics, or atomic physics. Previous research experience in many-body physics or quantum theory is advantageous but not mandatory. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required for the duration of the studies, and international applicants must secure a valid residence permit before the start of studies.
To apply, candidates should submit an online application via the University of Gothenburg’s recruitment portal. Required documents include an application letter detailing motivation and previous research experience, a detailed CV, copies or drafts of bachelor’s and master’s thesis (if available), exam transcripts, and contact information for at least two referees. The application deadline is March 1, 2026.
