About this position
The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), a leading research university in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association, is offering a PhD position (Doctoral Candidate / Research Assistant) in the field of Thermoacoustic Microenergy Devices. This position is hosted at the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT), renowned for its state-of-the-art research facilities and interdisciplinary environment.
The successful candidate will work on the development of advanced thermoacoustic microsystems that leverage the thermoacoustic effect to convert thermal energy into acoustic waves, enabling electricity generation or heat management at the microscale. The research aims to enhance the performance, efficiency, and scalability of these devices for applications in industry, automotive, and energy sectors.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and developing thermoacoustic microdevices with optimized acoustic and thermal properties
- Developing and refining numerical models to simulate device performance
- Fabricating and experimentally testing prototype microdevices for energy harvesting and cooling
- Integrating devices into practical applications such as micro-cooling systems and portable energy generators
- Simulation-based design optimization
The IMT provides access to a 600 m² clean room, mechanical workshop, advanced rapid prototyping (lithography, 3D printing, laser cutting), construction and connection technology labs, and various metrology laboratories. The position is part-time (75%) and limited to 3 years, with the opportunity to pursue a doctorate.
Eligibility requirements: Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Acoustics, Microengineering, or a related field. Essential skills include knowledge of mechanical engineering, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and microsystems, as well as experience in micro-scale device development, CAD, lumped element modeling, FEM simulation, MATLAB programming, and device testing. High proficiency in English is required.
Funding and benefits: The position is funded at salary category 13 (TV-L), part-time 75%, with a contract up to 3 years. Additional benefits include a EUR 25/month contribution to the Job Ticket Baden-Württemberg, flexible working models, training opportunities, and access to university sports, leisure, and childcare services.
Application process: Applications must be submitted online via the KIT job portal (see link below) using vacancy number 443/2025 by December 31, 2025. For further information, contact Dr. Jingyuan Xu at [email protected].
Join KIT and contribute to cutting-edge research in microenergy systems within a vibrant, international academic environment.
