About this position
The Computational Design Laboratory (CDL) at ETH Zurich, led by Professor Bernd Bickel, is seeking a motivated PhD student to join a cutting-edge research project in Visual Computing and (Self-)calibration for XR devices. The position is part of the ETHAR initiative, supported by a Google donation, and focuses on developing novel algorithms and systems for the calibration of extended reality (XR) devices. Research areas include computer vision, computer graphics, deep learning, sensor fusion, and computational design, with applications in augmented reality and spatial computing.
The successful candidate will design, develop, and evaluate methods for an online calibration framework that leverages deep learning to fuse data from multiple sensors, such as IMUs, cameras, and eye-trackers. The goal is to create adaptive systems that respond to physical changes and user context, enabling seamless and intuitive XR experiences. The research will involve the full scientific workflow, from problem motivation and literature review to system development, experimentation, and publication at top venues.
Applicants should have an excellent Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with a strong academic record and demonstrated experience in areas such as computer vision, computer graphics, computational imaging, VR/AR displays, or deep optics. Strong programming skills and proficiency with differentiable simulation frameworks are a plus. Excellent English communication skills are required.
The position is fully funded, offering a competitive salary and benefits according to ETH Zurich standards, including public transport, sports facilities, childcare, and pension benefits. The start date is February 2026, with some flexibility. ETH Zurich is committed to diversity, inclusion, and sustainability, providing a supportive and inspiring environment for research and professional development.
To apply, candidates must submit a single merged PDF file via the ETH Zurich online application portal, including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, three professional references, and a publication or thesis sample. Applications by email or post will not be considered. For further information, visit the CDL website or contact Mr. Fábio Porfírio at [email protected] (no applications).
