About this position
The Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture at Nord University in Bodø, Norway, is offering a three-year PhD position in zooplankton molecular ecology. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in understanding the ecological and genetic dynamics of Calanus species, which are vital to coastal ecosystems in the North Atlantic. The project leverages historical DNA from Nord University's zooplankton collections to explore how environmental and climatic factors influence the distribution of Calanus species in local fjords. The research aims to enhance knowledge of climate change impacts on plankton communities and improve forecasting of food-web structure changes in Norwegian fjords.
As a doctoral researcher, you will join one of the ecology divisions at Nord University, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team in a creative and collegial environment. The faculty is internationally oriented, with staff and students from 39 countries, and offers a PhD in Biosciences. The professional community is organized into divisions such as Aquaculture, Ecology, Genomics and Animal Science, Production and Welfare, and Algae and Microbial Biotechnology.
Applicants must hold an MSc degree (or equivalent) in biology, genetics, molecular ecology, or related fields, with a grade average of B or better (ECTS scale) for both the programme and master's thesis. Good written and oral English skills are required, and non-native speakers must provide recognized certificates of English proficiency. Practical experience in molecular ecology, population genetics, and statistical analyses is essential. Prior experience with zooplankton molecular ecology, Calanus, or DNA extraction from historical collections is preferred. Candidates who already have a PhD degree are not eligible. Employment is conditional upon admission to the faculty’s doctoral programme, and the final project outline must be approved within three months of starting.
The annual salary for doctoral researchers is NOK 550,800, with additional benefits such as pension, insurance, and loan advantages through the Government Pension Fund. The university offers flexible working hours, a progressive workplace, and an active sports team. Nord University encourages applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities, gaps in their CV, or immigrant backgrounds.
The application process involves evaluation by an internal expert committee, with relevant applicants invited for interviews or trial lectures. To apply, submit your application via the electronic form, including a motivation letter, complete CV, diplomas and certificates, master's thesis, and contact information for 1-3 references. Applicants from outside Scandinavia must provide witnessed diplomas and authorized English translations. All documents must be uploaded as PDF attachments before the deadline of 3rd May 2026.
