About this position

This PhD position at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem focuses on the overturning circulation dynamics of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS), a region critical for dense water formation and its influence on global climate systems. The successful candidate will join the Institute of Earth Sciences, renowned for its research in geophysical fluid dynamics, air-sea interaction, ocean and atmospheric circulation, climate change, and marine geoscience.

The project aims to investigate the physical processes and precise locations of dense water formation in the EMS, exploring whether these occur in gyres, boundary currents, or sub/mesoscale anticyclones. Research activities will include developing high-resolution numerical models, participating in observational campaigns, and deriving theoretical models and scaling laws to understand the EMS overturning circulation’s dependence on broader climate conditions. The position is part of a multi-institutional research grant, offering opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific growth. Supervision will be provided by Dr.

Aviv Solodoch, Senior Lecturer and head of the Physical Oceanography in Multiple Scales (POMS) Lab, whose expertise spans boundary current instability, vortex dynamics, density currents, and air-sea interactions. The Hebrew University’s Edmond J. Safra Campus provides state-of-the-art facilities and a vibrant academic environment, supporting diversity and inclusion among its international student body.

Funding for the position ranges from 80,000 to 120,000 NIS, depending on qualifications. Applicants should have a strong background in oceanography, fluid dynamics, atmospheric sciences, engineering, or applied mathematics, with experience in observational or experimental research considered an advantage.

The application requires submission of a letter of motivation, CV (including publications), and academic degree certificates as separate PDFs. The deadline for applications is December 16, 2025. The university is located in Jerusalem, offering a rich cultural and academic experience.
