About this position
This fully funded PhD position is part of the prestigious EU-funded ERC CoG 2023 project 'Thermal Modulators based on novel 2D MXene materials for nearly isothermal battery operation' (THERMO2DEAL), hosted by the National Research Council of Spain (CSIC) at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM-CSIC). The successful candidate will join the 2D Foundry group, working under the supervision of Dr.
Muñoz Rojo, and will be enrolled in the PhD program at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). The research focuses on modeling thermal transport in novel 2D MXene materials and devices, aiming to understand how material quality and size influence thermal properties. The project involves advanced computational techniques, including molecular dynamics simulations to study atomic-scale thermal transport and finite element modeling to analyze thermal behavior in electrochemical devices.
The position is fully funded for 36 months through the ERC Horizon Europe program, with a flexible start date around January 2026. Applicants should have a strong background in physics, particularly in thermal transport phenomena, and experience with computational modeling methods such as molecular dynamics and finite element analysis.
The role requires critical thinking, creativity, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment. The application process involves submitting a CV, academic transcripts, publication list (if applicable), proof of English proficiency, letters of recommendation, and a motivation letter by email. The selection process includes interviews, preferably via video conference. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated early-stage researcher to contribute to cutting-edge research in 2D materials and thermal management for advanced battery technologies, within a leading European research institute.
The ICMM-CSIC is located in Madrid, Spain, and offers a vibrant research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and collaboration opportunities. The successful candidate will benefit from a supportive academic setting and the chance to develop expertise in both fundamental and applied aspects of materials science and thermal transport.
