About this position
This PhD position at ETH Zürich, within the Security, Privacy and Society group led by Professor Verena Zimmermann, focuses on the complex interrelations between safety and security in critical infrastructures, with a particular emphasis on human factors. The interdisciplinary research group is part of the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (D-GESS) and collaborates closely with the 'Mensch in komplexen Systemen' research institute at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) and several Swiss infrastructure partners. The project aims to develop and evaluate a co-analysis methodology for identifying, quantifying, and comparing safety-security interrelations in critical infrastructures, such as hospitals affected by cyberattacks impacting patient safety. A key aspect is the analysis and enhancement of human factors that contribute to integrative security, including fostering collaboration between safety and security experts to address challenges and conflicts arising from their interrelations.
As a doctoral researcher, you will contribute to the group’s research activities, focusing on expert interviews, focus groups, classification of safety-security interrelations, development and evaluation of organizational measures for joint safety and security analysis, and the creation of human-centered strategies to improve integrative security. The group’s broader research interests include human-computer interaction, IT security, privacy, and the intersection of technology and society. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Work and Organizational Psychology, Engineering Psychology, Human Factors Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction), experience in human-technology interaction, and ideally familiarity with cybersecurity concepts.
Skills in empirical research (qualitative and/or quantitative), statistical data analysis (Excel, SPSS, Python, R), and fluency in German and English are required. The position is full-time, initially for 18 months with the possibility of extension for the full duration of the doctorate.
