About this position

The University of Twente invites applications for a PhD position focused on model-based wavefront shaping microscopy. This innovative project aims to revolutionize the way light is focused through non-transparent materials, moving beyond traditional iterative algorithms to a computational approach using 3-D models. The research will contribute to the development of a microscope capable of imaging inside complex materials without compromising image quality.

As a PhD candidate, you will build flexible 3-D ray-traced models based on STL files, 3-D voxel data, and other inputs. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to integrate your models with microscope hardware, graphical user interfaces, advanced machine-learning algorithms, and Maxwell solvers for scattering simulations. The project offers hands-on experience, including training in operating advanced microscopy systems and direct experimental testing of your models. Your work will have a tangible impact, enabling microscope users to examine samples non-destructively.

The research group investigates the use of light for medical purposes, developing optical and hybrid optical-acoustical technologies for medical research and diagnosis, particularly in oncology, wound healing, and microscopy. The department’s approaches include physical research into light-tissue interaction, biomedical engineering for instrumentation, and clinical evaluation with medical partners. The Faculty of Science & Technology at the University of Twente is renowned for its research in chemical technology, applied physics, and biomedical technology, and is part of three multidisciplinary UT research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centre, and Digital Society Institute.

The position is fully funded for four years, with a qualifier in the first year. The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,059 in the first year to €3,881 in the fourth year, plus an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Full-time employment includes a minimum of 232 leave hours, with additional leave hours for practical workweeks. The University of Twente offers excellent sports facilities and a vibrant campus life, and is committed to equal opportunities and family-friendly policies, including paid and unpaid parental leave.

Applicants must hold a MSc degree and demonstrate broad interests in biology, microscopy, and 3-D computer graphics. Strong scientific coding skills in Python are required, along with the ability to translate physical principles and mathematical equations into code. Experience in 3-D modelling, ray-tracing, or 3-D image segmentation is preferred, as is collaborative software development. Non-Dutch applicants who have not completed secondary and tertiary education in English must provide proof of English proficiency (IELTS ≥ 6.5, TOEFL-iBT ≥ 90, or Cambridge CAE-C/CPE).

To apply, submit your application via the provided link before May 20, 2026. Include a cover letter detailing your interest and qualifications, a CV with courses and grades, a list of publications and references, and links to representative code or a zipped project archive. Provide the names of at least two references. Applications with non-specific motivation letters will not be considered. For further information, contact Dr. Ivo Vellekoop at [email protected].
