About this position

The Achilleos Group at the School of Chemistry, University College Dublin (UCD), invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on the development of advanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems for ‘green’ fuel and chemical synthesis. This four-year studentship, commencing 1 September 2026, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research addressing global energy and environmental challenges.

With the rapid depletion of fossil fuels and rising ecological concerns due to greenhouse gas emissions, the transition to renewable resources is imperative. Artificial photosynthesis represents a promising solution, simultaneously tackling energy and environmental issues and aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The project leverages the group’s expertise in artificial photosynthetic systems to create next-generation PEC platforms for sustainable, low-carbon societies.

Key research objectives include: (i) designing and developing optimized photoelectrode structures with enhanced solar light absorption; (ii) utilizing low-cost, abundant substrates for synthesizing value-added organics of industrial importance; and (iii) developing and testing affordable co-catalysts and electrocatalysts to drive the formation of desired green fuels. The research is interdisciplinary, spanning applied chemistry, environmental chemistry, polymer chemistry, and synthetic chemistry.

Applicants should be from Ireland/EU and possess, or expect to obtain, a first class Honours degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or a related scientific discipline. Experience in photocatalytic, electrochemical/photoelectrochemical systems, and/or organic synthesis is highly desirable. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, are essential. The successful candidate will also be required to teach in undergraduate laboratories and tutorials as part of the scholarship.

The studentship provides a stipend of €25,000 per annum for up to four years, with EU-level tuition fees fully covered. Applications should include a cover letter, CV, detailed academic transcripts, and contact details for at least two academic referees. Please send your application by email to Dr. Demetra Achilleos ([email protected]). Early applications are encouraged, as the position will be filled once a suitable candidate is identified. Interviews will be conducted in person or via Zoom.

UCD is committed to equal opportunities and welcomes applications from all backgrounds. For further information and relevant references, see the project link and selected publications.
