This PhD position at the University of Poitiers, within the SEVE team of the Joint Research Unit Ecology and Biology of Interactions (EBI; CNRS), offers an exciting opportunity to advance sustainable agriculture by promoting symbiotic rhizosphere microorganisms to enhance drought resilience in protein pea crops. Protein pea (Pisum sativum) is valued for its high nutritional content and is central to achieving protein self-sufficiency in France and Europe. However, climate change and recurrent droughts threaten its productivity, making the development of drought-tolerant varieties and sustainable cultivation practices a strategic priority.
The project focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms and key factors underlying drought tolerance and beneficial plant–microorganism interactions, particularly regarding carbon metabolism. By harnessing naturally occurring microbial communities and evaluating innovative biostimulant solutions developed by ELICIT PLANT, the research aims to improve protein pea yield and resilience under water-limited conditions. Experiments will be conducted under controlled environments to characterize the effects of these interventions on root functioning, plant nutrition, growth, and yield, both in optimal and drought-stressed scenarios. The investigation of carbon fluxes within the plant will provide insights into performance and yield quality.
Outcomes from this research are expected to deliver practical, transferable solutions for farmers, support breeding strategies for climate-resilient pea varieties, and foster agroecological innovation. The SEVE team is internationally recognized for its expertise in sugar fluxes and plant–rhizobacteria interactions, with a strong publication record. The project is collaborative, involving a pea seed breeding company (RAGT 2n) and biostimulant developers (Agronutrition and ELICIT PLANT), ensuring a multidisciplinary and applied research environment.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent, or be graduates from an engineering school, with skills in plant physiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and statistical data analysis. Experience in plant experiments, motivation for plant physiology and plant–microorganism interactions, and proficiency in scientific English and data processing tools (Excel, R) are highly desirable. The position is full-time and temporary, starting 1 October 2026, with the application deadline set for 30 May 2026.
