About this position

This PhD position at Radboud University offers an exciting opportunity to join the HFML-FELIX Laboratory, a world-class research facility specializing in condensed matter physics. The project focuses on the ultrafast dynamics of magnetic switching in antiferromagnetic quantum materials, addressing fundamental questions at the intersection of magnetism, quantum materials, and advanced spectroscopy. As a PhD candidate, you will be part of a vibrant international research environment, collaborating with other PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff, as well as external users.

The research is supported by the ERC Advanced Grant for the INTERPHON project, led by Professor Andrei Kirilyuk. Two PhD positions are available, each exploring different aspects of ultrafast magnetic phenomena. One project aims to develop new methods for optically controlling the magnetic state of materials using infrared and THz radiation, with a focus on minimizing energy dissipation and maximizing speed. This involves investigating coupled spin-lattice dynamics and the mechanisms of ultrafast angular momentum transfer, which are central to modern magnetism. The other project investigates the static and ultrafast response of antiferromagnetic quantum materials, including phenomena such as anomalous spin dynamics and THz-range transport. Experimental work will utilize ultra-fast spectroscopy to generate and study coherent magnonic states and non-linear spin dynamics, paving the way for future low-power microelectronic applications.

The HFML-FELIX Laboratory is renowned for its advanced experimental techniques, including high magnetic fields, free-electron lasers, and a broad array of spectroscopy methods. The facility is part of a national consortium and serves as an international user center, providing a stimulating environment for young researchers. The Faculty of Science at Radboud University is committed to groundbreaking research and excellent education, with a strong international character and a supportive, inclusive atmosphere.

Employment conditions include a full-time contract for four years, with an initial 1.5-year term followed by a 2.5-year extension upon positive evaluation. The starting salary is €3,059 gross per month, rising to €3,881 in the fourth year, plus holiday and end-of-year bonuses. Additional benefits include extra annual leave, flexible working arrangements, pension plan, training and development opportunities, and dual career coaching for partners. The teaching load is up to 10% of working time.

Preferred qualifications include experience with optical and far-infrared spectroscopy, magnetism, magneto-optics, and low-temperature techniques. Proficiency in English is required.
