About this position

Join Aalborg University for a PhD position focused on advancing AI decision support in architectural design practice. This interdisciplinary project aims to integrate generative AI into the building design and operation process, supporting architects in creating more sustainable buildings through simulation-assisted performance feedback. The research will explore how AI systems can augment professional creativity, enabling concurrent optimization of human health and energy efficiency.

The position is based in the Department of Computer Science at Aalborg University's Technical Faculty for IT and Design, with close collaboration with the Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology. You will be part of the Human-Augmentation and Collaboration research group within the Human-Centered Computing Section, joining an active, interdisciplinary team with strong ties to architectural practice and a leading architectural firm.

Your work will involve fieldwork in real-world architectural settings, requirements gathering, interactive system development, and empirical evaluation. The project encourages candidates to shape research directions based on their interests and to publish in leading Human-Computer Interaction venues. The role is a three-year PhD stipend, starting August 1st, 2026 or soon thereafter, with the workplace located in Aalborg.

Applicants must hold a master's degree in human-computer interaction, computer science, interaction design, applied artificial intelligence, architectural design, or a related field. Strong collaboration skills and the ability to acquire new skills and technologies are valued. Outstanding spoken and written English communication skills are essential. Prior expertise in architecture is not required, but experience with HCI research, digital prototyping, and/or AI tools is advantageous. Candidates must be eligible for enrollment at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design.

Salary and terms of employment follow the Danish AC collective agreement. The position includes a mutual probationary period of three months. Aalborg University values diversity and encourages applications from all backgrounds. The hiring process includes shortlisting and assessment by qualified experts, with all applicants informed of their status after the deadline.

To apply, submit your application via Aalborg University's recruitment system, including a motivation statement, project description (max two pages), CV, and diplomas. For questions, contact Annemarie Davidsen or Niels van Berkel. Further information about the recruitment process and doctoral school is available on the university website.
