About this position

The Geoengineering Research Laboratory at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney is offering PhD positions in the School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering. Successful candidates will join teams working on newly awarded Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery and Linkage projects focused on the fundamental and applied aspects of bio-enhanced CO₂ mineralisation and hydrogen production. The research aims to develop innovative pathways for CO₂ mineralisation and gold hydrogen production by integrating microbiology and geochemistry with reactive-transport modelling and geomechanics. The goal is to better understand and optimise fluid–rock–microbe interactions and the resulting evolution of rock permeability.

Supervisors include Professors Hamid Roshan, Klaus Regenauer-Lieb, Michael Manefield, A/P Martin Andersen, A/P Hossein Masoumi, Dr Silvia Salgar Chaparro, and Dr Alex (Abolfazl) Hashemi. Applicants should have a four-year BSc or BE (Honours 1 or equivalent), or MSc, in relevant fields such as Geochemistry, Biology, Chemical and Petroleum, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering.

A Master's degree and prior research experience are desirable. Candidates must meet UNSW Engineering admission and English language requirements, with minimum scores specified for IELTS, TOEFL iBT, or PTE. The scholarship offers a tax-free stipend of $39,206 per annum for up to 3.5 years, with the possibility of a top-up for competitive candidates. Interested applicants should email Dr Alex (Abolfazl) Hashemi with their CV and academic transcripts, expressing interest by the end of December 2025.

This is an opportunity to join a leading research group at the forefront of geoengineering and environmental science.
