About this position
TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology) is advertising 2 open PhD positions in the Research Group for Structural and Material Simulation at the Institute of Lightweight Design and Structural Biomechanics in Vienna, Austria.
The positions are centered on computational materials modelling and computational mechanics of materials, with research topics including the finite element method, continuum mechanics of solids, nonlinear material modeling, damage and fracture mechanics, and applications to composites and adhesive joints. Programming skills in Python and/or Fortran and experience with a commercial FE package such as Abaqus are advantageous.
Both vacancies are university assistant prae-doc roles with a research-and-teaching component. The posts involve collaboration on research and teaching tasks, supervision of students, dissertation work, publications, participation in scientific events, and administrative support. One position is limited to 4 years; the other is a temporary cover role until 30.04.2029. Expected start is May 2026.
Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, materials science, computational science and engineering, or an equivalent field. Applicants should have basic academic research skills, strong knowledge in at least one relevant mechanics/simulation area, and very good German and English communication and writing skills at B2 level. Teamwork, problem-solving ability, and innovative thinking are emphasized.
Funding is a paid university position under the Austrian collective agreement for university staff, with a starting salary of EUR 2,832.10 gross/month for 30 hours/week, paid 14 times per year. Relevant experience may increase the salary, and the role may be increased to full-time if project funding allows.
