About this position

Two fully funded PhD positions are available in geophysics at the Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas at Austin, starting August 2026. The research will focus on developing next-generation models to understand the mechanics of earthquake faults and magma reservoirs, with applications to geophysical inversions.

Position 1 will involve developing neural operators for elastodynamic and viscoelastic problems, simulating magmatic dike propagation, and modeling volcano deformation. Position 2 will focus on numerical models for fault-fluid mechanical coupling in earthquake cycles, aiming to explain geophysical observations related to low frequency earthquakes and tremor. The ideal candidates will have strong backgrounds in applied mathematics and engineering mechanics, and a keen interest in geological dynamics. The program requires foundational coursework in calculus, statistics, and science or engineering, with additional relevant courses in geological sciences recommended.

The GRE is not required, but international applicants must submit TOEFL scores. Both positions are fully funded for five years, covering stipend and tuition. Applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Taiyi Wang with their CV and research interests, and to apply online by December 1 for fellowship consideration.

The Jackson School values holistic traits such as quantitative reasoning, research experience, and communication skills in its graduate students.

Funding details
