About this position

PhD positions are available in the Machine Intelligence and Human–Robot Interaction Laboratory (MItHRIL) at Queen’s University, based at the Ingenuity Labs Research Institute in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Led by Assistant Professor Matthew Pan, the lab focuses on cutting-edge research in human–robot interaction, assistive robotics, and machine intelligence. The positions are fully funded and expected to start in May or September 2026.

Two major research directions are offered:

  • Expressive & Performative Robotics: Supported by Connected Minds, this project blends robotics, neuroscience, and live performance to explore expressive movement, shared agency, and artistic human–robot interaction.
  • Intelligent Assistive Robotics for Healthy Aging (CaRollator): This project develops an intelligent robotic rollator to support mobility, balance, and fall-risk assessment for older adults, clinicians, and caregivers.

Candidates with backgrounds in robotics, electrical and computer engineering, computer science, human–robot interaction, mechatronics, or rehabilitation/biomedical engineering are encouraged to apply. The lab values curiosity, initiative, and interdisciplinary approaches, and strongly encourages applications from equity-seeking groups.

These positions are fully funded, with support from Connected Minds and other sources. The funding covers stipend and research expenses, though specific amounts are not detailed.

The application deadline is February 28, 2026, with start dates in May or September 2026. To apply or inquire, contact Assistant Professor Matthew Pan at [email protected]. For more information, visit the lab’s LinkedIn page or Queen’s University website.
