About this position
Two PhD positions are available at Freie Universität Berlin in the Hydrogeology group at the Institute of Geological Sciences, in collaboration with the Karst Research Institute in Postojna, Slovenia.
The research focuses on groundwater quality, pollutant fate and transport, groundwater ecology, microbial dynamics, and quantitative hydrogeology. A major theme is the development of early-warning systems for groundwater contamination in karst areas, with emphasis on the transport processes controlling the spatial and temporal dynamics of fecal bacteria and other proxies for microbial contamination in karst aquifer systems.
Methodologically, the project highlights in-situ flow cytometry for rapid analysis of total and intact cell counts, including differentiation between viable and dead cells and between low- and high-nucleic-acid-content cells. Additional proxies include selected hydrochemical parameters and particle size distribution.
The study area is the Malenščica karst spring in southwestern Slovenia, an important drinking-water source and a well-studied karst catchment with karst poljes, intermittent lakes, sinking rivers, and caves. The site offers extensive historical and current data for research.
PhD position 1 focuses on identifying groundwater microbial contamination dynamics. PhD position 2 examines mechanisms of groundwater quality deterioration based on sediment samples.
Eligibility highlights include a very good MSc degree in hydrogeology or a related field (e.g. geoecology, engineering biology, environmental sciences, water sciences), strong hydrogeological background, fieldwork experience, hydrochemical and microbiological analytics skills, excellent English, teamwork and independent working ability, and a valid driver’s license.
To apply, submit a single PDF with a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, contact details for 2–3 referees, and ideally your MSc thesis and/or publications. Send the application by email to the listed contact.
