About this position

The University of Amsterdam is offering three fully funded PhD positions within the ERC-funded project “The Governance of Loss in the EU,” based at the Amsterdam Law School. This interdisciplinary project explores how legal, political, and social systems address and manage loss within the European Union, providing candidates with the opportunity to engage in research at the intersection of law, governance, and European studies. The project aims to generate policy-relevant insights and contribute to academic and public debates on EU governance.

PhD candidates will conduct independent, high-quality research on assigned subtopics within the ERC project, publish in national and international journals, participate in academic meetings and workshops, and contribute to the dissemination of findings to policymakers and the public. The positions offer full PhD funding, close supervision, and training opportunities, with a salary in accordance with Dutch university PhD scales (€3,059 – €3,881 per month). Candidates will join an international, high-profile research environment at the University of Amsterdam.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in law, European studies, political science, or a related field. Strong analytical and writing skills in English are required, as well as an interest in governance, policy, or EU law. The project values motivation to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment.

To apply, candidates should submit a single PDF file via the UvA application portal, including a CV, motivation letter, and any additional required documents. The application deadline is 12 April 2026. For more information, visit the official vacancy page or contact the project supervisor, Christiana Banja, a qualitative researcher at the University of Amsterdam.
