About this position

The Research Training Group (RTG 2561) “MatCom-ComMat” at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in collaboration with Technical University Darmstadt and Dechema Research Institute, is offering up to twelve PhD positions focused on the development, characterization, and modelling of advanced composite materials for applications in extreme conditions. The research targets multi-phase composite systems engineered to withstand temperatures above 1300°C and challenging environments such as oxidative, corrosive, and erosive atmospheres. These innovative materials are created by combining metallic and intermetallic alloys based on refractory metals with polymer-derived ceramic nanocomposites. Doctoral researchers will join the Institute for Applied Materials - Materials Science and Engineering (IAM-WK) at KIT, working under the supervision of leading scientists and benefiting from opportunities for extended stays at partner institutions and support for international research visits.

The program offers excellent working conditions, access to training and qualification opportunities, flexible work models, and various university amenities. Funding is provided for three years under salary category 13 TV-L, with additional benefits including a contribution to the Job Ticket Baden-Württemberg. Applicants should possess a master’s degree in materials science, mechanical or chemical engineering, physics, chemistry, or a closely related field.

The program encourages applications from women and gives preference to severely disabled persons if equally qualified. The application deadline is January 15, 2026, and applications should be submitted online through the KIT portal. This is an outstanding opportunity for motivated candidates interested in cutting-edge research on advanced materials designed for extreme environments.
