About this position

The Research Training Group (RTG 2561) “MatCom-ComMat” at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) offers up to twelve PhD positions focused on the development, characterization, and modelling of advanced composite materials for applications in extreme conditions. This DFG-funded collaborative project brings together KIT, Technical University Darmstadt (TUDa), and Dechema Research Institute (DFI), providing a unique interdisciplinary environment for doctoral researchers.

Research within RTG 2561 centers on novel multi-phase composite systems designed to withstand temperatures above 1300°C and harsh environments, including oxidative, corrosive, and erosive atmospheres. The approach combines metallic and intermetallic alloys based on refractory metals with polymer-derived ceramic nanocomposites, targeting improvements in mechanical behavior, environmental resistance, and long-term durability.

Doctoral candidates will benefit from supervision by highly qualified scientists, including extended research stays at partner institutions and support for international collaborations. The program is hosted by the Institute for Applied Materials - Materials Science and Engineering (IAM-WK) at KIT, Germany’s only University of Excellence conducting large-scale national research.

Eligibility requires a completed master’s degree in materials science, mechanical or chemical engineering, physics, or chemistry. Candidates from closely related fields are also encouraged to apply.
