About this position

The Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS) is inviting applications for fully funded PhD positions in the areas of Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), under the supervision of tenure-track faculty member Abhilasha Ravichander. Research topics of interest include LLM factuality, reliable information synthesis and reasoning, personalization, applications in real-world domains such as education and science, data-centric interpretability, and creativity in AI, especially for scientific applications. Candidates are also encouraged to propose their own research directions within these broad areas.

MPI-SWS offers an internationally renowned research environment, collaborating with institutions such as Saarland University, Technical University of Kaiserslautern, and the Max Planck Institute for Informatics. The graduate program is structured into preparatory and dissertation phases, allowing students to explore various research areas before selecting a doctoral advisor. The working language is English, and students benefit from a multicultural, open environment in the heart of Europe, near the borders of Germany, France, and Luxembourg.

All admitted PhD students receive full financial support, including a stipend, social benefits, and funding for travel to conferences and events. There are no tuition fees, and additional support is provided for visa proceedings and accommodation. The program typically lasts 4-5 years, with students expected to pass a research qualifying exam within two years and complete their dissertation within three years after that. Students may also participate in internships at leading tech companies and attend summer schools or conferences.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree from a top-tier institution, have an outstanding academic record, demonstrate proficiency in English (with test scores strongly encouraged unless native), and provide strong letters of recommendation. The application process is highly competitive. Required documents include a CV, transcripts, statement of purpose, and contact information for two references. GRE scores are optional. Applications are accepted through the MPI-SWS online portal, with the next major deadline on December 31, 2025. In addition to the official application, candidates should fill out a Google form to notify Prof. Ravichander of their interest.

This opportunity is ideal for students passionate about advancing the state of the art in NLP, ML, and AI, and who are eager to work in a collaborative, innovative research environment. For more information, visit the MPI-SWS graduate studies page or contact Prof. Ravichander via her academic or LinkedIn profile.
