About this position
The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is recruiting two PhD students for research in Offshore Energy and Coastal Structures, starting Autumn 2026. The research group, led by Assistant Professor Shengjie Rui, focuses on advancing sustainable offshore energy and coastal structures, including offshore wind, wave, and tidal energy, as well as fixed and floating offshore structures, foundations, and coastal protection systems.
Research topics include offshore energy development (wind, wave, tidal, solar platforms), offshore geotechnics (site investigation, seabed-structure interaction, foundation installation, seabed dynamics, liquefaction, centrifuge modelling), and ocean/coastal engineering (hydrodynamics of platforms, subsea cables, mooring systems, pipelines, risers, coastal barriers, cofferdams, and seawalls).
Applicants should have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or related fields. Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Earth Sciences, and Remote Sensing are also considered. Candidates must demonstrate strong research interest, skills, and experience, be highly self-motivated, innovative, and possess interdisciplinary research skills. Programming proficiency (Python, MATLAB) and data analysis experience are required. Non-native English speakers must provide TOEFL/IELTS scores; GRE is optional.
The positions are fully funded with a scholarship covering tuition and stipend. NUS is ranked #8 globally and #3 in Civil and Structural Engineering by QS 2025. The application deadline is 30 December 2025. Interested candidates should email Dr. Shengjie Rui ([email protected]) with a CV, statement of purpose, transcripts, certificates, and referee contacts. For more details, visit the NUS Research Scholarship page.
This opportunity is ideal for students interested in offshore energy, coastal engineering, geotechnics, and interdisciplinary research at a top-ranked institution.
