About this position
The International Max Planck Research School for Systems and Process Engineering for a Sustainable Chemical Production (IMPRS SysProSus) offers a unique opportunity for talented junior scientists to pursue a PhD in a multidisciplinary environment. Jointly run by the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems and the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, the program focuses on innovative research in process engineering, applied mathematics, materials engineering, computational chemistry, and systems biology. The central aim is to develop new methodological approaches for replacing fossil raw materials in chemical production with renewable carbon sources, such as biogenic residues and plastic waste.
Doctoral candidates benefit from high-level scientific training, a well-balanced curriculum covering both scientific and soft skills, and the possibility to conduct part of their research at international partner institutions. The working language is English, and the doctoral degree is awarded by Otto von Guericke University. All PhD students receive a standard working contract or support contract with payment and benefits according to the public collective agreement (TVL/TVöD E13, 75%).
Applicants must have a Master Degree (or equivalent to the German Diploma) in relevant fields such as chemical engineering, materials engineering, bioengineering, systems and control theory, applied mathematics, computational chemistry, or systems biology. Solid expertise in the research area of the group applied for is required, and recent activities in the respective research field are welcome. Fluent English is mandatory, and Bachelor degree holders are not eligible. The application process requires submission of a CV, motivation letter, university degrees and transcripts (in German or English), two reference letters, and proof of English proficiency.
The Max Planck Society is committed to equal opportunities, gender equality, and diversity. Applications from women and severely disabled people are particularly encouraged. The application period runs from February 9, 2026 to March 22, 2026.
