About this position

The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) at Addis Ababa University is inviting applications for its 3rd Cohort PhD Program in Sustainable Development. This multidisciplinary program is developed in partnership with the University of Oslo and the University of Malawi, and is supported by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) through the NORHED-II program. The PhD program is designed for candidates passionate about governance, climate, equity, and the future of sustainable development. It offers multi-disciplinary teaching modules and opportunities for cutting-edge research. A limited number of funded PhD positions with stipends are available for top applicants, with funding tied to successful progress in the program. The program practices affirmative action, strongly encouraging female candidates to apply.

Eligibility requirements include passing the 2025 Graduate Admission Test (GAT), holding a research-based MA or MSc in Social or Natural Sciences, Development Studies, or Environmental Sciences/Studies, and submitting a one-page statement of purpose/intent, evidence of previous research work, and a five-page PhD proposal related to Governance for Sustainable Development. Two professional letters of recommendation are also required.
