The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Astrophysics offers a prestigious PhD programme in Physics, Astrophysics, and Astrochemistry, jointly awarded by Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU) and Technical University of Munich (TUM). Funding is provided through a work contract, offering a gross annual salary of approximately 37,000 - 40,000 EUR, varying by year, family status, and tax class. There are no tuition fees; however, an enrolment fee of about 150 EUR per semester covers a public transport ticket. Accommodation support is available for students relocating to Munich/Garching.
Admission requirements include an MSc in Physics or Astrophysics (or equivalent) with a Master's thesis of at least 60 ECTS points and a final grade of 'good' (2.5) or better. Exceptional candidates with a top 10% Bachelor's degree may be considered for direct admission, subject to additional coursework. English proficiency is mandatory for non-native speakers, demonstrated by TOEFL (minimum 75 iBT/550 PBT), IELTS (minimum band score 6), or equivalent certification.
