The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Astrophysics offers a prestigious PhD programme in Physics, Astrophysics, and Astrochemistry, jointly awarded by Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU) and Technical University of Munich (TUM). The programme is conducted in cooperation with leading research institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA), Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE), European Southern Observatory (ESO), and University Observatory Munich (USM), forming one of the largest centres for astrophysical research worldwide.

IMPRS provides a vibrant, international environment for highly qualified and motivated students from all countries. The language of instruction and communication is English, with optional German language classes funded for students. The programme duration is typically six semesters (three to four years), beginning each year on 1 September, with flexibility for earlier or later starts in consultation with supervisors. Funding is provided through a work contract, offering a gross annual salary of approximately 37,000 - 40,000 EUR, varying by year, family status, and tax class. There are no tuition fees; however, an enrolment fee of about 150 EUR per semester covers a public transport ticket. Accommodation support is available for students relocating to Munich/Garching.

Admission requirements include an MSc in Physics or Astrophysics (or equivalent) with a Master's thesis of at least 60 ECTS points and a final grade of 'good' (2.5) or better. Exceptional candidates with a top 10% Bachelor's degree may be considered for direct admission, subject to additional coursework. English proficiency is mandatory for non-native speakers, demonstrated by TOEFL (minimum 75 iBT/550 PBT), IELTS (minimum band score 6), or equivalent certification.
