About this position

The International Max Planck Research School for Chemistry and Physics of Quantum Materials (IMPRS-CPQM) offers a joint PhD programme in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (MPI CPfS) in Dresden, Germany, Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), and the University of St Andrews in Scotland. This programme provides a unique opportunity for doctoral research in solid-state chemistry and condensed matter physics, focusing on quantum materials and interdisciplinary scientific training.

IMPRS-CPQM students benefit from an individually tailored curriculum, including core courses that establish a foundation for interdisciplinary research, as well as access to a wide range of graduate courses offered by the participating universities and MPI CPfS. The programme also includes non-academic training such as skills courses, and international elements like guest lecturers, language training, and intercultural skills development. Research projects are conducted in collaboration with partners in Germany and abroad, and students are expected to contribute to teaching activities at the universities.

All PhD positions in IMPRS-CPQM are fully funded, with financial support covering living expenses. There are no tuition fees, though a semester contribution of approximately 300 EUR is required at TU Dresden. The programme duration is eight semesters, and students may begin at any time. Applicants must have an outstanding Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field, such as chemistry, physics, or materials science. Those admitted with a Bachelor's degree will take additional graduate courses to reach the equivalent Master's level. While IMPRS-CPQM generally does not require language certificates, the University of St Andrews requires evidence of English proficiency (e.g., IELTS).

IMPRS-CPQM provides comprehensive support for international students, including welcome events, cultural and linguistic preparation, assistance with visa matters, buddy programmes, help with accommodation, and support with registration procedures. Career advisory services and workshops are regularly offered to help students prepare for professional opportunities after completing their doctoral degree.

Applications are submitted online via the IMPRS-CPQM portal. The main recruitment window is toward the end of each year, but applications outside this window are also considered. For detailed information on the PhD training and application guidelines, visit the IMPRS-CPQM website.
