About this position

The PhD Programme in Educational Sciences at Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) offers a multidisciplinary research environment focused on teacher education and professionalism. The programme explores these areas through multiple methodologies and comparative analysis, connecting research in teacher education and professional practice in kindergartens and schools. Research is approached from both national and international perspectives, providing candidates with a stimulating and diverse academic community.

Admission to the programme is continuous, and applicants must demonstrate a strong academic background. Typically, a five-year master’s degree or equivalent in teacher education, educational sciences, development studies, or other relevant fields is required. Applicants must have achieved a grade of B or better on their master’s thesis, or, if the thesis grade is C, an average grade of B or better for the rest of the master’s degree. For integrated master’s programmes, the grade requirement applies to the last two years. Additionally, candidates must meet at least two criteria: documented scientific publication or research-related work experience. Applicants with a master’s degree of less than 120 ECTS credits may be considered based on individual assessment, provided the degree qualifies for PhD admission in the country of origin and includes a thesis with a grade of B or better.

Applicants must also document their own funding, which is typically secured through employment as a research fellow or a position at a Norwegian institution. Most PhD positions at the Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) are advertised in November/December. The application must include a comprehensive project outline, plan for implementation, funding details, dissemination strategy, information about stays at other institutions, supervision needs, preferred thesis language, and any intellectual property concerns. The faculty’s doctoral committee reviews applications and appoints supervisors, with the main supervisor preferably affiliated with OsloMet.

Successful candidates will be affiliated with a research community in the relevant field and will benefit from OsloMet’s career counseling services. The programme aims to offer high-quality postgraduate studies, an attractive learning environment, and assurance that candidates complete their degrees within the nominal length of study. Graduates are awarded the degree PhD of Educational Sciences (Ph.d. i utdanningsvitenskap) and are qualified for research careers at universities and university colleges, as well as positions in the public and private sectors requiring high academic qualifications. The programme develops theory of knowledge in teacher education as a distinct field of research and encourages contributions to research for teacher education at an international level.
