For integrated master’s programmes, the grade requirement applies to the last two years. Additionally, candidates must meet at least two criteria: documented scientific publication or research-related work experience. Applicants with a master’s degree of less than 120 ECTS credits may be considered based on individual assessment, provided the degree qualifies for PhD admission in the country of origin and includes a thesis with a grade of B or better.

Applicants must also document their own funding, which is typically secured through employment as a research fellow or a position at a Norwegian institution. Most PhD positions at the Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) are advertised in November/December. The application must include a comprehensive project outline, plan for implementation, funding details, dissemination strategy, information about stays at other institutions, supervision needs, preferred thesis language, and any intellectual property concerns. The faculty’s doctoral committee reviews applications and appoints supervisors, with the main supervisor preferably affiliated with OsloMet.
