The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) at Friedrich Schiller University Jena offers a structured, interdisciplinary PhD programme focused on the multifaceted communication between microorganisms. The programme brings together sixteen institutes across five faculties, six non-university research institutions, and twelve partner companies, providing a unique research environment at the intersection of biology, chemistry, medicine, environmental science, and technology. The primary working language is English, with optional German language courses available for international students.

Research at JSMC covers ecological, chemical, physical, geological, pharmaceutical, medical, and biotechnological aspects of microbial communication. International elements are integral to the programme, with guest lecturers, specialist literature in other languages, intercultural training, and collaborative projects with partners in Germany and abroad. Integrated internships at industry partner institutions are available for applied research projects. The JSMC also supports career development through advisory services, networking opportunities, and assistance in finding postdoctoral positions.

Funding is guaranteed for all recruited candidates, with support from the Carl Zeiss Foundation and the Excellence Initiative. There are no tuition fees, and an optional semester contribution provides access to student services and regional public transport. Living costs are estimated at approximately 850 EUR per month. Accommodation support is available through the JSMC Office and the Studierendenwerk Thüringen.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in natural or life sciences. Exceptionally, top five percent Bachelor's students may apply for direct admission with an additional year of qualification. Excellent English proficiency is required.
