The International Graduate School for Dynamics in Logistics (IGS) at the University of Bremen offers a structured doctoral programme for excellent early-stage researchers from around the world. The programme is embedded in the Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamics in Logistics (LogDynamics), a collaborative network of research groups from five departments: Production Engineering, Business Studies/Economics, Mathematics/Computer Science, Physics/Electrical Engineering, and Law. Associated partners include BIBA (Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH), the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL), Constructor University Bremen, and several international universities.

Research at IGS covers a broad spectrum, ranging from fundamental and applied research to practical implementation in logistics and production industries. The main research areas include business models, decision processes and economic analyses, holistic interdisciplinary methods for modelling, analysis and simulation, adaptive and dynamic control methods, and the synchronisation of material, information, decision, and financial flows. The programme aims to foster excellence in education and research through a multidisciplinary and cross-cultural approach, preparing doctoral candidates for careers in academia and industry.

The curriculum is designed as a full-time research course, with the doctoral project as its core. Candidates work within the disciplinary research group of their supervisor, benefiting from the expertise and infrastructure of their field. The programme also includes thematic introductions, subject-specific courses, interdisciplinary colloquia, dialogue forums, excursions, and individual coaching in soft and complementary skills. International elements are integral, with guest lecturers, language training, and intercultural skills development. Most doctoral candidates have a non-German background, and collaboration is encouraged through regular interdisciplinary research colloquia and soft skill training.

Doctoral candidates may participate in research stays at foreign universities or institutes and engage in transfer projects with industrial partners, depending on their research focus. There are no mandatory teaching or work obligations, but opportunities to contribute to teaching are available individually. The programme does not charge tuition fees, but a semester contribution of approximately 350 EUR (including public transportation) is required. Living costs in Bremen are estimated at a minimum of 1,036 EUR per month.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree equivalent to a German university degree in one of the relevant fields, with excellent marks. A preliminary research proposal and research plan are required, and the proposed topic must align with LogDynamics research and an active professor's area. English proficiency is mandatory (TOEFL or IELTS), and basic German familiarity is recommended. The application process is open year-round, and detailed guidelines are available online. While the programme does not offer scholarships, support is provided for third-party grant applications. Accommodation is not provided, but assistance is available through the university's Welcome Center.
